Oxis makes pop songs wrapped in static and water. The LA artist builds everything herself, layer by layer on a loop station, glitchy electronic pop that feels organic and digital at the same time, somewhere between Grimes and Mid-Air Thief. She has a name for the sound: oceanic electronica.
The name goes back further than the music. Oxis started as a childhood nickname, Latin for tuna, and the aquatic thing never let go of her. It's now the organizing idea of the whole project. Her debut album, Oxis 7, was framed as being made 7,000 feet below the surface, and it did real work above water too, earning her a tour opening for Magdalena Bay.
She's already onto Oxis 9. The deeper she goes, the better this gets.
