Rex Orange County’s sixth album is called Dream Fatigue, and it is out November 6. A new song, “Grandma Song,” is out now, with a video of him standing inside a fireworks display in Montana.
The guest list
Twelve songs, split into a side A and a side B. The features: Brendan Yates of Turnstile on “Elvis,” Mustafa on “The Colosseum,” and Daniel Caesar on “Indecision,” which has been out since August.
Mustafa also executive produced the record with Dylan Wiggins, whose credits include ROSALÍA and Justin Bieber. Dev Hynes, Taylor Skye of Jockstrap and dexter in the newsagent are on it too.
Letting people in
That is a lot of people for someone who used to do everything alone. Rex arrived in 2015 with a one-man, do-it-all ethos, and told SPIN the old way was partly about control, “some kind of control freak vibe.”
This time he opened the door, and describes the effect simply: “You want to raise the bar.”
It was recorded on the move: New York, Toronto, Rome, Egypt, Ethiopia, Los Angeles.
No tour, but living rooms
There is no tour announced. He says he wants to play the record the way he made it, “just me and a guitar,” in people’s homes, “if they’ll have me.” SPIN reports the plan covers houses across the UK, Ireland and Asia.
