Everyone wants a piece of Brendan Yates this year. The Grammys got there first, handing Turnstile two in February, Best Rock Album and Best Metal Performance. Since then the singer has spent the year turning up on other people’s records.
The year, in order
January. SPELLLING released a new version of “Portrait of My Heart” with Yates singing lead opposite her, a darker, moodier take that turns the song into a real duet.
April. American Football put him on the chorus of “No Feeling,” the single that led their first album since 2019. His voice sits inside the band’s bleary post-rock rather than on top of it.
Same month, Coachella. Dev Hynes played cello with Turnstile on “Seein’ Stars” during weekend one. A week later Blood Orange returned the favor, bringing Yates out on weekend two for “Alien Love Call.” They are on each other’s last albums, so it was a trade.
September. He is a co-lead vocal on “Powerlines” from beabadoobee’s Pylon, billed as a main artist on a duet built like a phone call. Hayley Williams and Chino Moreno are on the same record.
November. Drums and vocals on “Elvis” from Rex Orange County’s Dream Fatigue, and he is directing the video. He had already sung the last verse of it at Rex’s London show in August, before anyone had heard the song.
And Turnstile still did all of this
Between the guest spots the band played Coachella and All Points East, and announced Never Enough: Versions, a reimagining of the Grammy-winning album with Elton John on it. They make their Saturday Night Live debut on October 3.
