Who We Are

Medicine Box Magazine ("Medicine Box," "we," "us," or "our") operates the website medicineboxmag.com — a music publication covering artists, interviews, song analysis, and live sessions. Our mailing address and contact details are listed at the bottom of this policy.

Information We Collect

We collect information in two ways: automatically when you visit our site, and voluntarily when you contact us or submit something.

Automatically collected data includes:

• Pages you visit, how long you stay, and how you navigate the site
• Your approximate location (country/city level, derived from IP address)
• Browser type, device type, and operating system
• The hostname of the site that referred you (not the full referring URL), the landing path, and allowlisted UTM source, medium, and campaign values
• Advertising interaction data — which ads you see or click (collected by our ad partner, Mediavine)

Voluntarily provided data includes your name and email address if you contact us directly via email or a contact form.

We do not intentionally collect payment information, social security numbers, or sensitive personal data through reader measurement. Onsite search terms are filtered for likely contact details.

How We Use Your Information

• First-party reader measurement: We save a random, pseudonymous browser identifier and link your visits, pages and articles read, onsite searches, and reading activity across visits to understand repeat readership and improve the site. This continues when you decline optional services, unless you stop reader measurement in Privacy settings. Authorized editors can inspect an individual browser's recent reading history. This identifies a browser, not a person. We do not use raw IP addresses or device fingerprints as reader identity.
• Optional Google Analytics: We load Google Analytics 4 only when you choose it. Declining Google Analytics does not stop the separate first-party measurement described above.
• Optional personalization: With your permission, we may use the browser's reading history to decide which surveys, prompts, or tests to show it. Declining personalization prevents these individualized uses, even when first-party measurement continues.
• Advertising: We serve ads through Mediavine, an ad management network. Mediavine and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve you ads relevant to your interests, measure ad performance, and report on campaign effectiveness.
• Site improvement: Internal analytics (page view counts, article popularity) help us decide what to write and how to present it.
• Communication: If you email us, we use the information you provide solely to respond to your inquiry.

First-party reading events may include the referring hostname (not a full URL), landing path, and allowlisted UTM attribution; recommendation module impressions and clicks; active reading time; scroll milestones; article category; and the sequence of articles in a browser's journey. We use these events for aggregate reporting and individual pseudonymous browser histories available to authorized editors. Retention reporting measures recorded activity during fixed windows: 24–48 hours after the first recorded event, days 7–8, and days 30–31. A browser enters a window's eligible cohort only after that full window has elapsed.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We and our third-party partners use cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies. Here is what gets set:

• Medicine Box reader cookie: A pseudonymous first-party identifier links page visits, sessions, article categories, onsite searches, and interactions across visits, including when optional services are declined. It lasts up to 180 days and is refreshed on active return visits. You can stop this measurement and delete its linked history in Privacy settings.
• Optional Google Analytics cookies: Used only when you enable Google Analytics in Privacy settings.
• Advertising cookies (Mediavine and partners): Used to serve interest-based ads, measure ad performance, and limit ad frequency. These may include cookies from Google, Amazon, and other demand partners. Mediavine participates in the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework and supports the IAB CCPA compliance framework.
• Functional cookies: Small session cookies that help the site operate correctly (e.g., remembering your consent preferences).

Most browsers allow you to refuse or delete cookies via your settings. You can change your Medicine Box privacy settings here. To stop first-party reader measurement and delete this browser's linked detailed history, use the separate control below. Your stop choice is saved in this browser so a new identifier is not immediately created. Previously produced daily aggregates may remain because they cannot reasonably be linked back to this browser. Turning off optional Google Analytics or personalization alone does not stop first-party measurement. These controls are separate from Mediavine's advertising and privacy controls.

We work with the following third parties who may process data about your visit:

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party. Data shared with the services above is solely for the purposes described in this policy.

Mediavine Advertising Disclosure

Mediavine Programmatic Advertising (Ver 1.1)

The Website works with Mediavine to manage third-party interest-based advertising appearing on the Website. Mediavine serves content and advertisements when you visit the Website, which may use first and third-party cookies. Mediavine Partners may also separately collect data about end users from other sources, such as advertising IDs or pixels, and link that data to data collected from Mediavine publishers in order to provide interest-based advertising across your online experience, including devices, browsers and apps. This data includes usage data, cookie information, device information, information about interactions between users and advertisements and websites, geolocation data, traffic data, and information about a visitor's referral source to a particular website. Mediavine Partners may also create unique IDs to create audience segments, which are used to provide targeted advertising.

Data Retention

Google Analytics data is retained for 14 months. Detailed first-party reader events, including referrer attribution, recommendation events, active reading time, scroll milestones, article journeys, and filtered onsite searches, are retained for 90 days; inactive pseudonymous reader profiles are retained for up to 12 months; privacy-safe daily aggregates may be retained for up to 25 months. Advertising data retention is governed by Mediavine and its demand partners. Contact-form inquiries are retained for as long as necessary to respond and then deleted. You may stop first-party measurement and delete this browser's linked history using the control described above; you may also contact us to request deletion or access.

Children's Privacy

Medicine Box is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures — including HTTPS encryption for all traffic — to protect information transmitted to and from our site. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Links to Other Sites

Our site contains links to external websites (artist profiles, streaming platforms, social media). We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites and encourage you to read their privacy policies.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects when changes were last made. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. We will not materially reduce your rights without providing prominent notice.
